SOCIETIES

is a transmedia poetry and healing technologies lab for somatic, sonic, and scenic liberation through body-conscious expression and governance.

Established in 2017 as an institutional critique project by Ava Ansari, POETIC SOCIETIES operates in the form of a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization in Waawiiyatanong/Detroit with hubs in North America and Southwest Asia.

We design dynamics, spaces, devices, and resources to address creative, technical, and linguistic exhaustion, suppression, and negligence. We test theories and methods of social governance and communal care, embracing human bodies in their fullest and varied forms.

Our participatory projects and public programs share and test the discoveries of our “Crafted Counsel,” a framework for nurturing body-conscious togetherness, and the foundation for our global residency program of the same name. The initiative assists researchers, creators, tech and law practitioners, and healers during critical times, delving into varied dimensions and experiences of releasing pain from body across multiple locations and languages, attending to the unseen limbs and parallel lives of our community.

The glimmer of healing enduring imprints of forced movement, language, and suspense caused by geographical borders and institutional violence in unhurried modes is what we seek in each contact and form of communication. Aligning sensual, institutional, and digital bodies on local, global, and cosmic scales is our ultimate goal.
